The Score That Saved The Smash

It was late in the 4th quarter on November 28. A tense Smash stadium watched as their team fought against the Deadly Dogs with their first winning record and championship hopes on the line.

Both teams were frustrating each other throughout the quarter. Neither team's offense could make much progress and punts were kicked back and forth over the blue turf. The future of the Smash looked darker, until the Smash's outside safety stepped in front of a pass and sprinted to the Dogs' 26 yard line. The crowd's fear turned to excitement. With 3:23 left to go in the game, the powerful offense of the Smash tried to break through the big Deadly Dogs' defense.

The Smash made some big pass plays and got down to the four yard line with 1:50 left. The defensive line of the Deadly Dogs looked determined to shut down this attack and win the game.

The Smash QB ran the ball down to the one yard line. The Smash QB tried to run again on the next play, but was sacked by the Dogs' right tackle. With 3rd and goal on the 2 and just over a minute left, the Smash QB threw a quick pass to the right where the Smash receiver evaded the Dogs' defender and caught the game winning touchdown with 1:04 left. The stadium erupted and the players danced and celebrated in the end zone.

But it wasn't over yet! The roar of the crowd turned back to nervous silence as the Deadly Dogs completed a few deep passes and got to mid field with 20 seconds left, trying to get in field goal range. As the Dogs lined up for the next play, the Smash defense quickly adjusted. The Dogs' QB tried to make a quick pass, but missed his target and the Smash safety made another big interception to secure the win.

The Smash players and fans celebrated their victory not realizing how important that final touchdown was. Without that dramatic finish, they would have fallen out of first place, would not have won the network, and would not have gone on to be league champions. That thrilling touchdown will go down in IFL history and will be remembered by Smash fans forever.
